Accessing VET for school students in Tasmania

Vocational Education and Training (VET) provides a wide range of subjects and courses that are taught in a practical, hands-on way. Studying VET at school is an exciting way to introduce you to valuable knowledge and skills used in the workplace. It helps you prepare for the world of work and what it might look like when you enter the workforce. VET can help you gain points towards your Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) and it could also lead to a qualification that is recognised anywhere in Australia. VET qualifications include Certificates I-IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Graduate Certificate. School aged students can enrol in qualifications between Cert I and III level. Obtaining a Certificate III is another way to complete the equivalent of Year 12.

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are authorised to deliver nationally recognised qualifications (for example, Cert II in Business or Cert I in Hospitality). Schools work closely with RTOs to deliver high quality VET courses to you as a student. VET courses are available in a wide range of industries and in most of the learning areas available while you are still at school or college, from Creative Arts and Health and Physical Education to Food and Hospitality or Technologies like Design or Digital. The main provider of VET to public Colleges and Years 11 & 12 Extension Schools is the Tasmanian Secondary Colleges RTO (TSC RTO). To find out more information about the TSC RTO view the webpage or contact your local school or college to discover what VET courses and subjects they offer.

Studying VET is a great way to:

  • Combine classroom learning with on-the job learning
  • Earn money while you learn through an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA)
  • Access Trade Training Centres with their world class facilities
  • Start a journey to a range of career possibilities

Australian School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

An Australian School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (ASbA) provides you with an ‘earn and learn’ pathway that can give you a head start in your chosen career.

If you are in Year 10, 11 or 12 you are able to combine work, training and school to gain a nationally recognised qualification, usually at Certificate II or III level, across almost every industry sector.

It is another way to learn in the workplace during your school years. If you get a part-time job whilst at school some employers offer an ASbA or Traineeship with your part-time job.

As an ASbA student, you will enter into a contract of training and study a VET qualification as an apprentice or trainee at the same time as finishing school. You can work a minimum of 7.5 hours to a maximum of 15 hours a week during school term time, developing work skills under the guidance of an employer while a Registered Training Organisation provides the formal training required.

An ASbA can provide you with a valuable first step in your career and is a smart way to work and study as part of your vocational and/or university pathway. To find out more, phone 6165 6097 or send them an email.

Trade Training Centres

Trade Training Centres (TTCs) and Trade Skills Centres (TSCs) are specialised trade training facilities established in regional locations across Tasmania.

They make it possible for you to undertake accredited training in a purpose-built facility while you are at school. Information on the courses they offer can be found by clicking on the link for each centre below. Centres are also linked to an Extension School, who can provide courses to complement a training program for you.
